If god is moral, why does he advocate slavery?

Consider someone like Bernie Maddoff. Because He stole many dollars from many people, we are now going to charge the taxpayers some 50,000$/year to give him free room and board, with medical care, for the rest of his life. does that sound smart? or fair? In the olden days, if you owed someone, and couldn't pay, you were their servant for a period of time. Because YHVH accommodated the reality doesn't mean He totally approved of it.
